On International Women’s Day, we shine a spotlight on three extraordinary female educators from our school community - Julie Tovey, Ali Willis, and Jo Poppy - who have dedicated over 25 years of their lives to inspiring and empowering generations of students. Their unwavering commitment to their subjects, pastoral care, and breaking barriers in education has left an indelible mark on countless young lives, my own included.
Celebrating a Legacy of Empowerment
Julie Tovey, who has taught at the school across three decades, reflects on her role in shaping the future of young women. “I am passionate about encouraging the next generation to pursue their ambitions, whatever they may be,” she shares. Julie emphasises the importance of reframing failure as a growth opportunity and of acting as a role model in leadership and adds,
“It’s crucial for young women to see women in leadership roles and to challenge stereotypes. Empowered women pay it forward.”
Facing Challenges with Grace
Ali Willis, who has held various leadership roles at the school, including Assistant Head Safeguarding and Well-being, speaks about the challenges of balancing career and family.
“The main challenge has been balancing career and family, but I have had an amazing support network, even an OC neighbour babysat my children when I had parent’s evenings and rehearsals”
Ali expressed gratitude for the individuals who helped her navigate her various roles and responsibilities. Ali also stresses the importance of an inclusive culture where both girls and boys see women thriving in leadership positions. “It sets the expectation for the future workplace,” she notes.
Inspired by the Next Generation
Jo Poppy, a superb English Teacher who has also helped to guide countless young people in her role as a tutor, highlights the mutual inspiration that educators and students share. She recalls Jenny Mildren, a student from the Class of 2022, who inspired her through immense resilience and strength in the face of life’s challenges.
“Her determination has left a lasting impression on me”
Jo shared, her moving memories, and reinforced how educators often learn just as much from their students.
A Collective Commitment
Today, we celebrate the invaluable contributions of Julie, Ali, and Jo, as well as all female educators who continue to inspire students to reach for the stars. Their dedication ensures that every young person, regardless of gender, has the opportunity to thrive.
Let us honour them and their work in building a brighter, more inclusive future for us all.
