We are sad to inform you of the death of Neilson Tom Widdas who was a border at Colstons 1944 – 1948, his school number was 104.

He passed away peacefully on January 9th with his family around him at the age of 86 after suffering from asbestosis for some years.

After leaving Colstons in 1948 he completed his engineering apprenticeship at Cardiff Dry Docks and then moving on to Newcastle Upon Tyne after which he joined the Merchant Navy becoming Chief Engineer Officer in 1969 for Blue Star Line going on to complete a total career of 45 years in the Merchant Navy.

He retired in 1999 and was living with his family in St Arvans near Chepstow. He spent a lot of time riding and working on his collection of classic British motorcycles and was riding most days up until only a few months ago.

In 1980 I followed in his footsteps and attended Colstons myself as a border until 1985.

Attached is a picture which may be of interest, it is believed this was taken in 1946 on Charter Day, Neilson is second back on the left hand side playing the drum in the Colstons Cadets

His funeral is going to be held this coming Tuesday Feb 11th at 2.30pm, Langstone Crematorium near Newport

Our thoughts are with Jerry Widdas, son and the family.
