OCGS Meeting at Cumberwell Park – 23rd September 2018
After 36 hours of almost incessant rain and drizzle prior to the morning of the event, it would have been possible to obtain odds of at least 10/1 that our Autumn Meeting would have to be postponed. However, Bob Jennings and Steve Tucker, after analysing an up to the minute weather forecast, and a report direct from the course, took the bold decision to defy the odds, and a pre-arranged e-mail was sent just after 9.00am to all participants, confirming that the event was definitely ON.
Their decision was handsomely vindicated. On cue, the sun appeared just before mid-day leading to a dry, pleasant afternoon, with a drying, albeit slightly chilly, breeze and only one very brief shower. The course was in remarkably good condition, probably helped by its elevated position, and drainage into its numerous lakes of a typical Adrian Stiff designed course. All added up to a setting for a most enjoyable afternoon of golf.
This meeting was a return to Cumberwell after our last visit in the Summer of 2016. Our report of that day extolled the virtues of the investment and enhancement which had taken place over recent years, and which is still most relevant today. The course now features 36 holes, plus a 9 hole Par 3, with a clubhouse, and visitor lodges to match the best.
After meeting at mid-day for a welcoming coffee and catch-up, the first group teed off just before 1pm. We again played largely on the original 18 holes, although the sequence has been slightly modified.
Most people will have their favourite holes, amongst this most pleasant parkland course, liberally interspersed with woodland and lakes. Our group particularly liked the 3
rd (Par 3) elevated tee over a large lake, the similarity being repeated on the 16
th. The long 11
th which dog-legs around dense woodland to the right presents a challenge, and the continuously uphill 18
th stimulates both thirst and appetite.
Fortunately there were a good selection of beers and ciders on hand in the comfortable clubhouse, although surprisingly the bar had run out of Moles Beer, from the distinguished local brewery. Almost akin to Subway running out of bread!
An excellent meal followed, the main course being Breast of Chicken, wrapped in Ham, and a liberal supply of vegetables, sufficient to meet even the demands of Colston’s ex-boarders.
Dave Tooze gave his customary welcome to the 19 golfers. The support from our regulars is truly commendable, many had travelled considerable distances – Pete Skeels-Piggins (Falmouth), Pat & Sam Bowrey (Westward Ho). Pat & Sam were imminently moving to Carlyon Bay (possibly to provide a more expansive venue for our pre-dinner drinks parties!) We wish them a most enjoyable time in their new home.
We were particularly pleased to welcome two “first-timers”. The Headmaster joined us for his first “day” event, although we had enjoyed Jeremy’s company at Carlyon Bay earlier in the year. Also Louise, - Richard Hibberds delightful partner, made her debut as a golfer, again Louise had joined us as a guest at Royal North Devon last year. Both recorded very creditable scores, and in our group Jeremy demonstrated some impressive long drives. Importantly we trust that O.C. meetings which hold good golf, great company, and an enjoyable day out in equal measure, will encourage them to join us at future events.

Dave concluded by again thanking Bob Jennings and Steve Tucker for organising yet another hugely enjoyable day, and Doug Lodge who managed to combine good golf with his customary array of excellent photographs.
The Calendar for 2019 has not yet been formulated, but without doubt Bob and Steve will arrange a “not to be missed” programme of events, and we look forward to seeing everyone in the Spring.
