Old Colstonian Golf Society : Minchinhampton Meeting – 7th July 2017

Once again attendance at Minchinhampton was in the 30s, due testament to the popularity of this eminent golf club and course with the O.C.G.S.  As many will be aware Minchinhampton features three courses – the original on the Common, plus two 18 holes adjacent to the clubhouse,  the Avening, and the Cherington.

Warm sunny weather created perfect conditions, which allied to delightful Cotswold scenery enhanced a course already benefitting from fast fairways and greens in equal measure.  Two or three holes have low stone walls as added hazards, and adjacent to two others are typical charming Cotswold stone cottages.

After an initial welcome and a quick renewal of acquaintanceship the O.C.s set off to accept the challenge of the Cherington course.  The golfers split into 10 three balls, amid speculation as to which groups would feature the day’s winners.  The bookmakers favourites the Bowrey family allstars, were closely followed in the betting by the trio featuring Chris Wells, and Jeremy Davis, or would the veterans group of Dave Hodgson, Peter Huckle, and Peter Skeels-Piggins, conserving their energies in buggies, spring a surprise.

My playing partners were my old Roundway pal Roger (Teddy) Fry and Richard Lewis.  It was marvellous to see Teddy making a welcome O.C. comeback after a year’s chemotherapy, and playing some commendable golf, on his first 18 holes without a buggy.  Richard, who had travelled from his home in the Wirral, played progressively better throughout the round.  Apart from an uncanny ability, attributed to his home, very tight, course, to locate our “lost” balls in the long grass off the fairways, Richard had some very amusing but appropriate descriptions of our less memorable strokes.  A very mediocre drive was a “Son-in-law” – “not quite what you wanted, but it will do”.  A struggle to escape a sand hazard was an “Adolf Hitler” – “2 shots in the bunker”, while a putt which stopped an inch from the hole was a “Cuban” – “needed one more revolution.”

A return to the Clubhouse, a shower, and enjoying one of the selection of real ales which are a feature at Minchinhampton, an equally enjoyable meal of generous portions of ham, egg, fries, and side salad, and chocolate toffee desert, recharged the proverbial batteries.

Prior to the Prize Giving, O.C. President Bob Jennings appraised the gathering of a very deserving cause that the O.C.s were supporting.  11 year old Ethan Holway, son of an O.C., and hoping to go to Colston’s himself, was raising funds for the Autistic Society, in recognition of the help given to his two autistic brothers.  Ethan’s programme includes a 72 hole challenge at the Kendleshire Golf Club.  A glass was circulated at Minchinhampton donating £134 from the O.C.G.S. for this worthy cause.

O.C.G.S. Captain Dave Tooze gave his customary welcome to the attendees, who again had travelled from many parts of England.  Of particular mention were newcomer Gino Rosolek, plus Jeremy Davis, Chris Wells and Ian Roberts all making returns to our events, in addition to Teddy Fry on his comeback from long term treatment.  He also proposed passing the Golf Society’s best wishes to stalwarts Dave Shaw (illness) and George Thomas (injury) with hopes for a speedy recovery.

A number of golfers were clearly on a form conducive with the course/weather conditions, and the prize winners were as follows:

Winner Bob Smith Cup Net Score Jeremy Davis 68 points

2nd Net Score Sam Bowrey 69 points

1st Gross Mike Humphries

2nd   Pat Bowrey

1st Stapleford Chris Wells

2nd    Steve Tucker

Nearest to the Pin (Par 4, 3rd ) Gino Rosolek

Nearest to the Pin (Par 3, 10th ) Bob Jennings

Over 70s' Prize Mike Brown

Our next event is the not to be missed visit to Royal North Devon on Sunday, 10th September.  It was agreed that Steve Tucker would circulate full details of the meeting, including a request to ascertain who would be staying in Westward Ho on the Saturday night (9th).  Based on the response Sam and Pat Bowrey would look at a Saturday evening meal at R.N.D. or a local establishment.

Next year’s calendar would be initiated with our trip to Carlyon Bay.  Ian Roberts offered to check the possibility of a summer meeting at his club, Bristol and Clifton.

In conclusion Dave Tooze thanked Bob Jennings and Steve Tucker for arranging, and the seamless running of a most excellent day, and Doug Lodge who commendably managed to combine a good golf performance with another top photographic recording of the day’s many highlights.
